What do you need to care for membrane clothing?
Care and repair products help Finntrail waders, jackets and boots stay dry and breathable for longer. The detergents, impregnation sprays and odour neutralisers here are from the Polish manufacturer Mountval, while the adhesives and patches are from Gear Aid. Most people need just two steps: wash with a detergent made for technical clothing, then renew the water repellent coating with an impregnation product. You only need adhesive when a hole appears.

How to choose
The order is always the same: clean first, then impregnate, and repair a specific hole separately. Suitable for: Mountval products are made for technical and membrane fabrics, leather, suede and nubuck. Not suitable for: patent leather, fabric softener used together with detergent or impregnation, a damaged membrane. Check the care label for: temperature, programme and whether tumble drying is allowed.

- •Impregnation does not repair a membrane. It restores surface water repellency, but it does not fix a damaged membrane or leaking seams: that is what repair products are for.
- •Ordinary fabric softener is not suitable. It coats technical fabric and reduces water repellency, so do not use it with Mountval detergents and impregnation products.
- •Odour neutralisers are not detergents or disinfectants. They reduce odour but do not wash out dirt or stains.
- •Mountval footwear impregnation sprays and cleaners are not suitable for patent leather, and test brightly coloured suede and nubuck in an inconspicuous spot first.
Frequently asked questions
In what order should I care for a membrane jacket or waders?
First wash with a detergent made for technical clothing, then renew the water repellent coating with an impregnation product and dry according to the label. Repair a hole on clean, dry fabric, because adhesives and patches do not hold on dirt.
Can membrane clothing be washed with ordinary detergent?
Better not. Ordinary detergents and fabric softeners leave residues that coat the fabric. Mountval Wash & Care is made for technical and membrane fabrics, with a dose of 45 ml per cycle; finntrail.lt sells it in bundles.
Why are my waders getting wet when I cannot see a hole?
When dampness shows over a wide area, it is usually the water repellent coating that has worn off, not a hole: washing and impregnation help then. If water gets through at one spot, look for a hole or a seam and repair it with adhesive.
Do the same products work on boots and clothing?
Only some of them. Mountval Waterproof is made for both footwear and textiles, Mountval Protector only for footwear, and Textile Shield and Waterproofing Refresher only for textiles. The Shampoo and Gel Cleaner are for boots, the detergents for clothing.
