How to choose
Softshell jackets differ less in waterproof rating than in warmth and cut. Where the manufacturer gives a figure (NITRO, TACTIC), it is 7,000 mm: enough for drops and spray, but not for long rain.

- •Long rain. Softshell is not waterproof, and in long rain water will get through: choose a membrane rain jacket.
- •Wading and deep fords. Standing in water you need a wading jacket with a membrane.
- •Winter cold on its own. A softshell jacket is not a winter jacket; in the cold choose a warm jacket.

Will a softshell jacket handle rain?
A short shower and drops, yes; long rain, no. Softshell fabric with a DWR coating repels water but is not waterproof: NITRO and TACTIC are rated at 7,000 mm, membrane rain jackets at 12,000 to 20,000 mm.
Can a softshell jacket be worn under a membrane jacket?
Yes, in colder weather a softshell jacket works as a mid layer under a membrane jacket or overall. It holds off the wind and keeps in warmth, while the membrane on top protects you from rain. More in the layering guide.
What is the difference between NITRO 1320 and NITRO 1325?
The construction is the same: 3-layer softshell fabric with a fleece lining, 7,000 mm and 10,000 g/m²/24h. The difference is the colour: NITRO 1320 is red, NITRO 1325 graphite grey.
How does TACTIC differ from STRETCHSHELL?
TACTIC 1323 has a detachable hood, underarm vents, RIPSTOP elbows and a 7,000 mm rating. STRETCHSHELL 1317 is a stretchy jacket with a hood; the manufacturer gives no waterproof rating for it.
How do I care for a softshell jacket so it keeps repelling water?
When drops no longer bead on the surface, wash the jacket with a detergent for membrane clothing and renew the water repellent coating with an impregnation spray, and the fabric will repel drops again. Products are in the care and repair products section.
