Which rain trousers should you choose?
Finntrail rain trousers are membrane trousers that keep the rain out and let sweat escape. The range includes light trousers for your backpack, tougher models for a whole day in the rain, bib trousers with braces and women’s models. Waterproof ratings run from 12,000 to 20,000 mm. For autumn fishing THUNDER 1305 suits most people, while for ATV riding the tougher EXPERT 4602 with reinforced zones is the better pick.

How to choose
First decide whether the trousers will sit in your backpack as a backup or be worn all day in the rain. Second, look at the membrane: 2.5-layer models are lighter, while the 4-layer EXPERT 4602, EXCALIBUR 4616 and TOURNAMENT 4604 are more durable and have reinforced zones.

- •Cold without an extra layer. Rain trousers have no insulation; for winter choose warm trousers.
- •Wading. The legs are open, so water will get inside. That is what waders are for.
- •A dry day when you walk or ride a lot. Stretchy softshell trousers are more comfortable then.
- •Work near open fire or welding. The membrane is not spark resistant.
Frequently asked questions
Are rain trousers rated at 12,000 mm enough?
For a short shower on a hike, yes: that is the rating of OUTDOOR 1310, OUTDOOR W 1312 and LIGHTSUIT 4614. If you sit on a wet bench or kneel for long, choose a 17,000 or 20,000 mm model.
What is the difference between the EXCALIBUR 4616 and TOURNAMENT 4604 bib trousers?
Both have a 4-layer membrane and a 20,000 mm rating. EXCALIBUR 4616 breathes better (10,000 g/m²/24h against 7,000), while TOURNAMENT 4604 has four chest pockets and a tool loop.
Which rain trousers can I put on without taking my boots off?
THUNDER 1305 rain trousers are the easiest: side zips up to the knee let you pull them on over your boots. The descriptions of the other Finntrail rain trousers do not list such zips, so they are easier to put on before your boots.
Which rain trousers are the lightest?
The LIGHTSUIT 4614 rain trousers: the manufacturer calls them ultralight, and they fold into a backpack. With the same 12,000 mm protection but better breathability there are the OUTDOOR 1310 trousers.
Why do rain trousers look soaked through after a few seasons?
Usually it is the water repellent DWR coating that wears off, not the membrane: the fabric surface starts absorbing water and chills you. Wash the trousers with a detergent for membrane clothing and renew the coating with an impregnation product.
