How do you fix a hole in your waders or a sole coming unstuck?

How to choose
First decide what you are repairing: fabric or a boot. Suitable for: Aquasure+ FD for neoprene, rubber, nylon, canvas and vinyl; Aquasure+ SR for leather, suede, rubber and neoprene; Hex patches for nylon, polyester, fleece, vinyl and unoiled leather. Not suitable for: a wet, dirty or cold surface. Check the label for: application conditions, stated by the manufacturer as 15 to 38 °C and humidity above 40%.

- •Widespread wetting out is not a hole. When dampness shows over the whole surface, the water repellent coating has worn off: then washing and a Mountval impregnation product help.
- •A patch will not hold a long split whose edges need pulling together: it covers a hole but does not join the edges of the fabric.
- •A sole that has come away from toe to heel is a job for a cobbler, not adhesive.
- •A repair that must be finished within an hour: the adhesive takes at least 8 hours to cure. It is also flammable, so it is not suitable for children to use without an adult.
Frequently asked questions
Can wet wader fabric be glued?
No. Apply adhesive and patches only to a clean, dry surface in a warm room: for Aquasure+ adhesives the manufacturer states 15 to 38 °C and relative humidity above 40%.
Patch or adhesive: which lasts longer?
Aquasure+ FD adhesive is made for a permanent bond: once cured it becomes flexible, abrasion resistant rubber. A Tenacious Tape Hex patch is a quick repair on the spot, and on waders it works as a temporary fix until a glued repair at home.
How long until the repair is ready?
Aquasure+ FD and SR adhesives cure in 8 to 12 hours. Hex patches hold immediately, but the item can only be washed 24 hours after application.
How should I store an opened tube of adhesive?
The manufacturer recommends keeping it in a bag in the freezer. That way you can use the remaining Aquasure+ adhesive for another repair, and one 28 g tube fixes several spots.
Does the repair withstand the cold?
Yes. The manufacturer states that a cured Aquasure+ repair withstands temperatures from minus 29 to plus 82 °C. The adhesive must be applied in the warm, but you can use the repaired item in winter too.
