Which rain jacket should you choose?

How to choose
First decide how long you will be in the rain. The waterproof rating of membrane rain jackets runs from 12,000 to 20,000 mm, and breathability from 7,000 to 10,000 g/m²/24h: the more you move, the more the second number matters.

- •A long downpour in SKYLIGHT 1301. It has no membrane, only a DWR coating: for long rain choose a membrane model.
- •Cold without a layer. A rain jacket has no insulation; for winter choose a warm jacket.
- •Deeper wading. When standing in water a wading jacket, worn with waders, is more practical.
- •Covering your whole body. A jacket only covers the top: for long rain you also need rain trousers.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a 12,000 mm and a 20,000 mm rain jacket?
A 20,000 mm membrane withstands higher water pressure, so it has more margin in a long downpour and where backpack straps press on the jacket. 12,000 mm is enough for changeable weather and shorter rain.
What does g/m²/24h mean on a rain jacket?
It is breathability: how many grams of sweat vapour the membrane lets out through a square metre in 24 hours. In rain jackets it runs from 7,000 to 10,000, and if you move a lot it is worth choosing 10,000.
Which rain jacket suits ATV riding?
APEX 4027 is the most practical for an ATV: 15,000 mm, a ventilation system and reinforced zones. If you ride in the rain for long, choose a 20,000 mm model, such as the four-layer SPEEDMASTER 5320.
How does a rain coat differ from a jacket?
A coat is longer: DryCoat 4020 covers you to the knees, SHADOW 1303 well below the waist. That is handy when you stand or sit in the rain, while for active movement or on an ATV a shorter jacket does not restrict your movement.
Are there women’s rain jackets?
Yes, three models. OUTDOOR W 1311 and SIERRA 3451 are light, with a 12,000 mm membrane, while THUNDER W 1306 is made for long rain and has a 20,000 mm membrane.
