Which warm jacket should you choose for winter?
Finntrail warm jackets are made for winter fishing, snowmobiling and long periods in the cold. Most of them have a membrane and insulation, so they protect you from both snow and cold. The manufacturer rates their warmth down to −20 °C (ATLAS) or −30 °C (BOOST, POWERMAN, SNOWRANGER). If you stand on the ice for long or ride a snowmobile, it pays to choose a −30 °C model.

How to choose
First decide whether you will mostly stand still or move. Standing on the ice you need more warmth, while for riding a snowmobile a hood that fits over a helmet and wind protection matter most.

- •Rain in LUMBER 1324. Its fabric is not waterproof; for a rainy day choose a rain jacket.
- •Active movement in spring and autumn. You will soon sweat in a warm jacket; a softshell jacket or a membrane jacket with a layer underneath is more comfortable.
- •Replacing trousers. A jacket only covers the top: on the ice and on a snowmobile you need warm trousers or a warm suit.
Frequently asked questions
What does “down to −30 °C” mean on a jacket?
It is the limit the manufacturer sets for the jacket. How warm you will actually be also depends on the layers underneath and on whether you move: standing on the ice you get cold faster, so wear a thermal and a mid layer under the jacket.
How does the BOOST parka differ from a warm jacket?
BOOST 2016 is longer, with an extended back, so it covers you better when standing or sitting in the wind. The manufacturer rates it down to −30 °C, and the membrane’s waterproof rating is 10,000 mm.
Does a helmet fit under the jacket hood?
Yes, POWERMAN 3760 and SNOWRANGER 3758 have adjustable hoods that fit over a helmet. Both models are made for snowmobiles and temperatures down to −30 °C, so you do not need to take the hood off because of the helmet.
Is a warm jacket waterproof?
Models with a HARD-TEX membrane withstand wet snow and rain: ATLAS has 12,000 mm, POWERMAN 17,000 mm, BOOST 10,000 mm. The exception is LUMBER 1324, whose fabric is not waterproof.
What sets the ICEBREAKER down jacket apart?
ICEBREAKER 2017 is the only down jacket: insulated with goose down, it has a snow skirt and a hood with detachable fur trim. The manufacturer gives no temperature limit, and the seams are taped only at critical points.
