Which wading boots should you choose?

Finntrail wading boots go over the neoprene sock of your waders and support your ankle when wading a river or crossing a ford on an ATV. They are not watertight: water drains out through the drainage holes, and the sock of your waders keeps you dry. The key choice is the sole: felt grips on weed covered stones, rubber suits both stones and mud. A rubber sole suits most people, for example WADEMAN 5203.

How to choose, who they are not for, and FAQ

    Who they are for

    • •Anglers wading in a river or lake in stockingfoot waders that end in a neoprene sock.
    • •ATV riders who cross fords: a high shaft supports the ankle, and water does not collect in the boot.
    • •Fishing rocky rivers with a slippery, weed covered bed: that is what the felt sole models are for.
    • •Anyone who walks a lot along the bank and through mud: mud does not build up in the mud-free tread.

    How to choose

Take the boot one size larger than usual, because the neoprene sock of your waders goes inside it; the exact chart is in the size guide. Then choose the sole to suit the riverbed you will walk on most.

What wading boots are not for

    • •Staying dry without waders. Wading boots are not watertight: water drains out through the drainage, and the neoprene sock of the waders keeps you dry.
    • •Bootfoot waders. They do not need separate boots; you will find these models in the waders section.
    • •Mud and outdoor work with an ordinary sock. Waterproof rubber boots are more practical for that.
    • •Long walks on trails. Wading boots are designed for water, while hiking boots are more comfortable for hiking.

    Frequently asked questions

What size wading boots should I take?

Take one size larger than usual, because the neoprene sock of your waders goes inside the boot. The chart is in the size guide, and if the size is wrong you can exchange or return the boots within 30 days.

Felt or rubber sole: which should I choose?

A felt sole grips best on wet, weed covered river stones, while rubber is more versatile: it suits stones, mud and the bank alike. If you walk a lot along the bank or ride an ATV, choose rubber.

Why do wading boots have holes?

They are drainage holes: water that gets into the boot drains out through them, so the boot does not get heavy and dries faster. It is not the boot that keeps your feet dry but the neoprene sock of your waders.

Can wading boots be worn without waders?

Yes, but your feet will get wet, because the boot lets water in and out through the drainage. On a warm day it is more comfortable to wade without waders in the light, draining STREAM shoes from the hiking boots section.

How do I care for wading boots?

After fishing rinse the sole and drainage holes with clean water and let them dry naturally, not on a radiator. Cleaning and impregnation products are in the care and repair products section.
