What should you use to wash technical clothing and clean boots?
Mountval washing, cleaning and freshening products are made for what ordinary detergent does not suit: fleece, merino wool, down and outdoor footwear. This section has three groups: detergents for clothing, footwear cleaners and odour neutralisers. Start with a detergent that matches the material on the label, and add a freshener when a washed thermal layer still smells.
How to choose, what they are not for, and FAQ
What they are for
- •Fleece, softshell, merino and down: there is a separate Mountval detergent for each of these materials.
- •Leather, suede and textile boots with leftover mud or salt marks.
- •Thermal underwear, boot interiors, helmet liners and gloves, when odour remains even after washing.
- •Membrane jackets and waders that need washing before impregnation.
How to choose
Choose by what you are caring for. Suitable for: fleece, softshell, synthetics, wool, down, leather, suede, nubuck, textiles. Not suitable for: fabric softener together with any of these products, patent leather for the cleaners. Check the care label for: temperature, programme and whether tumble drying is allowed.
Group Best for Products Detergents for clothing When you wash fleece, softshell, merino or down: a dedicated detergent for each material. Mountval Polar Wash, Wool Wash and Down Wash, 300 ml each Footwear cleaners When boots need cleaning before impregnation, or a single stain needs removing. Mountval Shampoo 100 ml, Mountval Gel Cleaner 100 ml Odour neutralisers When odour remains after washing, or the item cannot be washed: boot interiors, a helmet, gloves. Mountval Silver Freshness 315 ml and 20 g, Odour Absorber 100 ml, Helmet Clean & Fresh 100 ml Detergent for membrane clothing Rain jackets and waders. Sold in bundles: a double pack or together with an impregnation product. Mountval Wash & Care 315 ml What these products will not do
- •Detergents and cleaners do not impregnate. Water repellency after washing is restored by a separate impregnation product.
- •Fabric softener is not compatible with Mountval detergents and fresheners: it coats the fibres and reduces the fabric’s functional properties.
- •Odour neutralisers are not detergents or disinfectants: they do not wash out dirt or stains.
- •Footwear cleaners are not suitable for patent leather unless the boot label allows it, and the boots themselves must not get soaked while cleaning.
Frequently asked questions
Why can’t everything be washed with one detergent?
Because materials react differently: fabric softener reduces the properties of technical fabric, wool shrinks in hot water and down clumps. That is why Mountval has separate detergents for membranes, fleece, wool and down.
What is the order: wash, freshen or impregnate?
Wash or clean first, because both the freshener and the impregnation work less well on dirt. Silver Freshness goes in the rinse compartment, and boot impregnation is sprayed only onto a clean, dry surface.
What should I wash Finntrail thermal layers with?
Go by the composition on the label: Mountval Wool Wash for merino and wool, Polar Wash for synthetics and fleece. If odour remains after washing, add 45 ml of Silver Freshness to the rinse.
Where can I find Mountval Wash & Care for membrane clothing?
Finntrail.lt sells it in bundles: a double 2 × 315 ml pack or together with Waterproofing Refresher. The dose is 45 ml per cycle, for up to two garments.
