Which impregnation product should you choose: for boots or clothing?
Mountval impregnation products restore surface repellency against water and dirt: rain beads up and rolls off again, and fabric or leather does not soak up moisture. This section has two groups: footwear impregnation sprays for leather, suede and nubuck, and clothing impregnation products for technical fabrics. If you want one product for both boots and a jacket, choose Mountval Waterproof.

How to choose, what they are not for, and FAQ
What they are for
- •Jackets, trousers and waders on which water no longer beads up, and the fabric darkens and gets heavy.
- •Protecting new hiking or work boots before their first rainy day.
- •After washing, when technical clothing is clean and the surface protection needs restoring.
- •Backpacks, tents, hats and gloves that are often out in the rain.
How to choose
First decide what you are impregnating: boots or fabric. Suitable for: leather, suede, nubuck, textiles, technical fabrics and items with membranes. Not suitable for: patent leather, a damaged membrane, a dirty surface. Check the care label for: brightly dyed and light leather, delicate fabrics and whether spray products are allowed on the item.

- •Impregnation does not repair a membrane. It does not make an item waterproof and does not seal holes or leaking seams: that is what repair products are for.
- •Impregnation does not clean. On dirt the coating forms unevenly, so first wash or clean the item.
- •Mountval impregnation products are not suitable for patent leather: the sealed finish does not absorb the product, and marks may remain.
- •Waterproofing Refresher is not compatible with fabric softener: softener coats the fabric and reduces water repellency.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know it is time to impregnate?
When water no longer beads up but soaks in and darkens the surface. For heavily used footwear this is usually once a season or more often, for clothing after washing, when the coating no longer repels rain.
Can I spray a boot impregnation product on a jacket?
Only Mountval Waterproof: the manufacturer makes it for both footwear and textiles. Mountval Protector is for boots only, while Mountval Textile Shield or Waterproofing Refresher are better suited to jackets and trousers.
Does impregnation clog the membrane?
No. Mountval impregnation products are made for items with membranes and act on the outer surface, not the membrane itself. The manufacturer states they are designed not to block breathability.
Should I impregnate a clean or a dirty item?
Only a clean one. Clean boots first with Mountval Shampoo or Gel Cleaner, wash clothing with a detergent made for technical clothing, and only then impregnate, otherwise the coating will form unevenly.
