Spray-on or wash-in: which impregnation should you choose for clothing?
Mountval clothing impregnation products renew the water repellent coating of jackets, trousers and waders so that rain beads up again. The range offers two methods: the Mountval Textile Shield 300 ml spray for specific areas and smaller items, and Mountval Waterproofing Refresher 300 ml, poured into the rinse compartment of the washing machine. For a whole membrane jacket or waders, Refresher is the more convenient choice for most people.

What they are for

How to choose
Suitable for: textiles, technical and membrane fabrics, jackets, trousers, waders, backpacks, tents. Not suitable for: a damaged membrane and leaking seams, a dirty unwashed item, washing with fabric softener. Check the label for: temperature, whether tumble drying is allowed and whether Textile Shield should be sprayed on dry or damp fabric.

- •Impregnation does not repair a membrane: it does not seal tears, holes or leaking seams. That is what repair products are for.
- •It does not make a garment waterproof. After impregnation softshell or another non-membrane fabric repels rain, but waterproofness comes from the membrane and the garment’s construction.
- •It does not clean. Wash a dirty item first with a detergent made for technical clothing, and do not use fabric softener: it reduces water repellency.
- •It is not suitable for leather boots: they have their own footwear impregnation sprays.
Frequently asked questions
How much Waterproofing Refresher do I need for one wash?
75 ml in the rinse or softener compartment, and that amount is enough for two items. So a 300 ml bottle lasts for about four such cycles.
Does tumble drying help the impregnation?
If the item’s label allows it, the heat of a tumble dryer helps set the water repellency of Waterproofing Refresher. If not, let it dry naturally, hung up in a well ventilated place.
Can waders be impregnated?
Yes. Mountval Waterproofing Refresher is made for membrane clothing, so it suits wader fabric, and Mountval Textile Shield is handy for an extra spray on the areas that rub most.
Does Textile Shield change the colour of the fabric?
The manufacturer states that it does not. Still, test delicate and decorative fabrics in an inconspicuous spot first, and spray an even layer without soaking the fabric.
