Which mid layer should you choose?
The Finntrail mid layer is warmth-holding clothing worn over thermal underwear and under your outerwear. The range includes Polartec fleece jackets, trousers and an overall, as well as light MASTER jackets and vests with synthetic insulation. On a cold day a fleece jacket on top and thermal trousers below suit most people.

Who it is for
- •Fishing while wading: the POLAR 1400 and SHERPA 1402 trousers and the POLAR 1395 overall are worn under waders.
- •Winter fishing, snowmobile and ATV riding under a warm suit or jacket.
- •Hunting: the MONTIUM fleece jacket does not rustle, has a windproof membrane and an antenna port for a radio.
- •Women: the POLAR W 1396 fleece jacket is cut to a women’s pattern.
How to choose
First decide what you want to keep warm: your upper body, your legs or your whole body. The second question is fleece or an insulated jacket: fleece breathes and suits cold weather, while MASTER jackets are lighter and pack down small. How to combine the layers is explained in our layering guide.

- •Rain without an outer layer. Fleece is not waterproof, and the DWR coating of MASTER jackets only repels moisture. A rain jacket protects you from rain.
- •Wearing directly on the skin when you move a lot. The base layer wicks sweat away from the skin, and the mid layer is worn over it.
- •The hardest frost on its own. The manufacturer rates the fleece models down to −25 °C, but only combined with an outer layer, such as a warm suit.
Frequently asked questions
Fleece or an insulated jacket: which is warmer?
According to the manufacturer’s ranges, the Polartec fleece models with an outer layer suit temperatures down to −25 °C, MASTER jackets down to −10 or −15 °C. MASTER jackets are lighter, pack down small and are comfortable on their own in cool weather.
What is the difference between MASTER, MASTER HOOD and MASTER HYBRID?
MASTER 1503 and 1509 have no hood and are rated from +15 to −10 °C. MASTER HOOD 1504 and 1510 have a hood and are rated from +10 to −15 °C. MASTER HYBRID 1507, with stretch side panels, is made for active use, from +15 to −5 °C.
Thermal trousers or an overall under waders?
The POLAR 1395 overall keeps you warm in one piece, leaves no cold gap at the waist and has a hygiene hatch. The POLAR 1400 trousers with Softshell knee panels are more practical when you want to combine the top separately.
Can MONTIUM be worn instead of a jacket?
In windy, cool weather, yes: the MONTIUM windproof membrane stops wind and light rain, and the Sherpa lining holds in warmth. It is not made for heavy rain; then you need a rain jacket on top.
