Detergents for clothing

What should you wash fleece, merino or a down jacket with?

Mountval detergents for clothing are made for materials that ordinary detergent damages: fleece and softshell, merino wool and down. This group has three 300 ml detergents: Polar Wash, Wool Wash and Down Wash. Choose by the garment’s label, while Mountval Wash & Care for membrane jackets and waders is sold in bundles.

How to choose, what they are not for, and FAQ

    What they are for

    • •Fleece jackets, softshell jackets and trousers, stretchy sports fabrics.
    • •Merino thermal tops, socks, hats and gloves.
    • •Down jackets, vests, insulated trousers and sleeping bags.
    • •Anyone who washes without fabric softener so the fabric keeps its properties.

    How to choose

Suitable for: fleece, softshell and synthetics (Polar Wash), merino and other wool (Wool Wash), natural and synthetic down (Down Wash). Not suitable for: fabric softener with any of them, hot water and bleach for wool. Check the label for: temperature, programme and whether tumble drying is allowed.

    What they are not for

    • •Detergents do not impregnate: water repellency after washing is restored by a clothing impregnation product.
    • •Polar Wash is no substitute for a membrane detergent: when the DWR coating and membrane matter most, choose Mountval Wash & Care.
    • •Wool Wash is not suitable for membrane clothing and down, and Down Wash is not suitable for wool.
    • •Do not leave a down item damp: down that is not fully dried stays clumped and may start to smell.

    Frequently asked questions

    Can merino be machine washed?

Yes, if the label allows: Mountval Wool Wash is used on a wool programme or by hand, at a low temperature. Do not wring hard, and dry items that lose their shape flat.

How much Down Wash should I use for a down jacket?

75 ml in the main wash compartment, or 75 ml in 15 litres of water when washing by hand. After washing, shake out the jacket and dry it fully, shaking it regularly so the down does not clump.

Can a sleeping bag be washed?

Yes, Mountval Down Wash also suits sleeping bags. The manufacturer advises washing a large sleeping bag only in a drum where it can move freely.

Why shouldn’t I use fabric softener?

Fabric softener coats the fibres: technical fabrics lose their functional properties, and down clumps and loses its loft. Polar Wash softens the fabric itself, so no fabric softener is needed.
