Which hiking boots should you choose?
Finntrail hiking boots are made for the trail, off-road and travel. Most models have a HARD-TEX membrane: it keeps water out and lets sweat escape. Choose by shaft height and season: low shoes for easy hikes, high boots for rough terrain, insulated ones for the cold season and draining shoes for wading streams. The first question: should the boot keep water out or let it drain quickly? The second: shaft height and season. Membrane boots keep out rain and puddles, draining shoes let you wade and dry quickly.

- •Wading deeper than the shaft. Water that runs in over the top stays inside a membrane boot, so for fords choose wading boots with waders.
- •Hard frost and long hours standing on the ice. That is what snow boots with a removable inner boot are for.
- •Wearing STREAM or LIGHTWAVE shoes in the rain. They have no membrane, so water gets inside.
- •Mud and outdoor work, when you hose your boots down often. Rubber boots are more practical for that.
Frequently asked questions
Are membrane hiking boots waterproof?
The HARD-TEX membrane keeps out rain and puddle water as long as water does not run in over the shaft. At the same time it lets sweat escape, so on a long hike your feet stay drier both inside and out.
High or low shaft: which should I choose?
A high shaft supports the ankle better on uneven and slippery terrain, so choose it for long off-trail hikes. Low shoes, such as OUTDOOR 5178, are more comfortable on an even trail, for travel and in town.
Which hiking boots suit autumn and winter?
For the cold season there are the insulated FORCE 5174, rated by the manufacturer from +10 to −10 °C, and ROVER 5175, down to −15 °C. Your pace also affects the limit, and for harder frost choose snow boots.
Can I wade a stream in hiking boots?
In membrane boots you will get through a shallow puddle dry, but water that runs in over the shaft stays inside. For crossing streams there are the draining STREAM 5177 and 5205: water drains out through holes in the sole, and the shoe dries quickly.
How do I care for membrane boots?
Rinse off the mud with clean water and a soft brush, do not put them in the washing machine, and dry them at room temperature, not by a radiator. To keep the upper from soaking up water, treat it from time to time with products from the footwear impregnation sprays section.
