How should you dress for fishing by the water?

Frequently asked questions
What should I wear for my first time wading in a river?
Thermal underwear next to your skin, stockingfoot waders with neoprene socks, wading boots and a membrane wading jacket. This combination works from spring to autumn; you only change what you wear under the waders.
Do I need waders for fishing from a boat?
Usually not. In a boat, protection from rain and spray matters more, so a rain suit or the TOURNAMENT 4604 bib trousers with rubber boots suit you better. Waders come in handy when you have to push the boat off the bank.
How many layers do I need for a long day by the water?
Usually three: a thermal layer next to the skin, a fleece that holds warmth and a membrane outer layer against rain and wind. On a hot day a single UV layer is enough. Read more in our layering guide.
Does the same clothing work for both river and lake?
Essentially, yes. On a river, wading boots that grip the stones matter more, while on a lake bank or in a boat you more often need a rain suit and rubber boots. Waders, thermal and UV layers suit both.
What clothing should I take on a fishing trip of several days?
Two sets of thermal underwear, a fleece layer, a membrane rain top and waders if you will be wading. Keep spare clothes in the boat or tent in a waterproof backpack so they stay dry.
