How should you dress for ice fishing?
Finntrail winter fishing gear is arranged by how a day on the ice goes: walking out with your gear, drilling the hole while your back warms up, and long hours on an open, windy expanse. Here you will find warm suits, boots, thermal layers, gloves, socks, head protection and backpacks. What matters most is that they work together: a warm outer layer will not help if the layer next to your skin stays damp.
How to choose, who it is not for, and FAQ
Who it is for
- •Long hours sitting by the ice hole, when your body hardly moves and the clothing, not movement, has to hold the warmth.
- •An open stretch of ice where the wind blows with no shelter: a membrane suit and balaclava stop it where a single fleece layer would give in.
- •Walking to a distant spot with an auger and a box: that is when a backpack and a mid layer you can take off while walking come in handy.
- •A thaw, when water and wet snow lie on the ice: membrane boots and gloves keep you dry even when you kneel by the hole.
How to choose
Dress from the skin outwards: thermal underwear first, then a warm suit, then feet, hands and head. Each model appears once in the table, in the group where it is most useful to an angler on the ice.
What you need on the ice When it matters most Models A warm suit Always: it stops wind, snow and water, while the insulation holds warmth as you sit. NORDY 3757, POWERMAN 3760 and 4625, SNOWRANGER 3758 and 4619, BLIZZARD 3856 Thermal clothing Under the suit: the base layer wicks sweat after drilling, the mid layer holds warmth. THERMO S 6304, MERINO 6209, POLAR JACKET 1391, POLAR 1400, MASTER HOOD 1510 Boots and socks When you stand or sit for hours on end: cold reaches your body through the soles first. TOURING 5230, BLIZZARD ATOP 5234, EXTREME MERINO 3203 Gloves and head protection By the hole and in the wind: your hands get wet and the wind hits your face and neck. NORDIC 2942, LOBSTER 2800, WINTERSPORT 2704, HAT WATERPROOF 9714, RAVEN 9725 A backpack When you walk to your spot and carry spare clothes, food and small gear. RANGER 50L 1708, EXPEDITION 40L 1730, TRACE 30L 1711, TARGET 20L 1716 Who this collection is not for
- •Summer and autumn fishing. Insulated suits and boots are too warm then; the Fishing gear collection is made for it.
- •Safety on thin ice. This clothing keeps you warm and dry, but it does not replace ice picks and other safety equipment.
- •A day when you wear everyday clothes under a warm suit. Without a layer that wicks sweat, moisture stays on your skin and chills you.
Frequently asked questions
Where should I start when choosing my first ice fishing clothing?
With a warm suit and thermal underwear, because they cover the largest area of your body. As a second step, get warm boots with wool socks and gloves, and add a balaclava, vest and backpack once you feel where you get coldest.
How do I avoid getting cold after drilling a hole?
Before drilling, open your suit or take off the mid layer, and zip up again as soon as you finish. That way you sweat less, and your thermal underwear has time to wick away the moisture while you sit by the hole.
Is this clothing also suitable for a snowmobile?
Some of it is: the BLIZZARD 3856 overall, BLIZZARD ATOP 5234 boots and RAVEN 9725 balaclava were designed precisely for snowmobile riding. If you ride more than you fish, take a look at the Snowmobiles collection.
Why are there uninsulated models among the winter suits?
EXCALIBUR 4616 and LIGHTSUIT 4614 are made for a thaw, when water stands on the ice and sleet falls. They keep moisture out, while the warmth comes from what you wear under them, so in hard frost choose an insulated suit.
