How should you dress for snowmobile riding?
Finntrail snowmobile clothing is a layering system for speed, wind and deep snow: thermal underwear next to the skin, a warm membrane suit or overall, warm boots, gloves, a balaclava under the helmet and goggles. Choose the suit and boots first, because they keep out the most cold and snow, and match the rest of your kit to them.
How to choose, who it is not for, and FAQ
Who it is for
- •Long routes across frozen lakes and forest trails, when you sit into a headwind for hours on end and the cold bites harder at speed than when standing still.
- •Riding in deep snow, when the sled gets stuck: digging it out and lifting it makes you sweat, so the thermal layer has to move sweat away from the skin and the membrane has to let the vapour out.
- •Riding standing on the footboards: a one-piece overall or bib trousers with braces leave no gap at the waist for snow to get in.
- •For women there is the ATLAS W 3460 suit with a snow skirt, and among the thermal layers the POLAR W 1396 fleece jacket with a women’s cut.
How to choose
Work from the outside in. The suit and boots keep out wind and snow, the thermal layer handles sweat, and the accessories protect the places that freeze first at speed: your fingers, face and eyes.
What you need When it matters most Models Snow suits Always. A one-piece overall lets no snow in when you fall, while a two-piece suit is easier to adapt to a long trip with stops. - •Impact protection. Suits, balaclavas and goggles protect against cold, wind and snow; choose your helmet and body armour separately.
- •Swimming or long periods in water. The F.I.L.L. system in the FLOAT 3902 and ESCAPE 3756 suits only helps you stay afloat if you fall through the ice: it does not replace a life jacket.
- •ATV riding once it warms up. In an insulated suit you quickly overheat above zero; that is what ATV clothing is for.
- •Long hikes on foot. Boots with a thick inner boot are heavy and too warm for walking; hiking boots are more comfortable for that.
Frequently asked questions
Where should I start if I am buying snowmobile clothing for the first time?
Start with a suit or overall and boots: they cover the largest part of your body and keep out the snow. Next come thermal underwear, gloves and a balaclava under the helmet, and you can add goggles and a backpack later.
Why is it colder when riding than when standing still?
The headwind constantly strips heat from your body, so your fingers, face and neck get cold first. That is why a windproof membrane, sealed cuffs, a high collar and a balaclava under the helmet matter on a snowmobile.
How do I avoid getting cold after warming up digging out a stuck sled?
The sweat has to move away from your skin before you sit down and ride again. Wear a synthetic or merino thermal layer under your suit, not cotton, and open the suit’s ventilation zips while you dig, if the model has them.
How many layers should I wear in hard frost?
Usually three: thermal underwear next to the skin, a fleece or light insulated layer, and a warm suit. Under a suit rated down to −40 °C the mid layer can be thinner, but under the uninsulated BACKCOUNTRY 3903 overall it is essential.
