Which boots should you wear for snowmobile riding?

Finntrail warm boots for snowmobiling are tall winter boots with a removable inner boot or liner. They keep your feet warm while you stand on the footboards and wade through deep snow. Three models have a HARD-TEX membrane and 1,200 g of insulation. For riding all day TOURING 5230 or BLIZZARD 5226 suits most riders, and if you want to tighten your boots without taking your gloves off, choose BLIZZARD ATOP 5234.

How to choose, who they are not for, and FAQ

    Who they are for

    • •Standing on the footboards for long: the BLIZZARD ATOP 5234 sole with an EVA layer reduces the cold coming through the sole, and BLIZZARD 5226 also has a HighLoft insole.
    • •Getting stuck deep: a tall boot together with the snow gaiters of your suit keeps snow out while you dig or push the sled.
    • •With thick gloves: BLIZZARD ATOP 5234 tightens with a turn of the dial, so you do not have to take your gloves off on the trail.
    • •Breaks in a cabin or by the campfire: the inner boot comes out and dries separately from the outer boot, so you do not put on damp boots the next morning.

    How to choose

All four models are tall and warm. They differ in the closure and in whether the membrane covers the whole boot or only the lower part is waterproof.

    What they are not for

    • •Wading through open water or slushy ice above the ankle. The NORDY 5237 upper does not keep water out, and even the membrane models are made for snow, not for wading.
    • •Long hikes on foot. Double construction boots are thick and heavier; for longer walks hiking boots are more comfortable.
    • •Thin cotton socks. Damp cotton chills your foot even in the warmest boot, so wear merino socks.

    Frequently asked questions

Can the ATOP dial be turned with gloves on?

Yes, that is what it is made for: the dial tightens the boot in one move, so when you stop on the trail you do not have to take your gloves off and tie laces in the cold. BLIZZARD ATOP 5234 has the dial.

Why do my feet get cold on the footboards even though the boots are warm?

Usually moisture or a boot that is too tight is to blame: sweat dampens the sock, and a squeezed foot warms up less well. Take a boot in which your toes move freely in a thick sock, and wear merino socks.

How does NORDY 5237 differ from the membrane models?

NORDY 5237 has a waterproof rubber lower, while the upper has only a water repellent coating. Its liner with 800 g of Thermalrate is made for temperatures down to −30 °C, while TOURING, BLIZZARD and BLIZZARD ATOP have 1,200 g and are rated down to −75 °C.

Do the boots slip on ice when I push the sled?

The BLIZZARD sole is made of rubber and a non-freezing compound to grip icy surfaces, and the TOURING sole is non-slip rubber with a reinforced heel. On glare ice, still place your feet carefully.

Where should I dry the inner boot after riding?

Take it out and leave it to dry indoors, away from radiators and the campfire: heat damages the materials and the membrane. Rinse the outer boot with clean water, and do not put it in a washing machine.
