Which backpack should you carry on your back when snowmobiling?
Finntrail backpacks for snowmobiling are water resistant backpacks with welded seams, from 20 to 50 litres, that protect spare gloves, a dry layer and food from snow and meltwater. For riding with a pack on your back, the compact TARGET 1716 or TRACE 1711 with a chest strap is the most comfortable for most riders, and for trips of several days choose RANGER 1708.
How to choose, who they are not for, and FAQ
Who they are for
- •Riding over bumps: the chest strap of RANGER 1708, TRACE 1711 and TARGET 1716 holds the load snug against your back while you stand on the footboards.
- •Spare kit: dry gloves, socks and a mid layer stay dry even when the backpack gets snowed on or ends up in the snow after a fall.
- •Routes of several days: RANGER 1708 has MOLLE webbing for extra gear and a removable hip belt that spreads the weight.
- •Riding home after dark: the reflective TRACE 1711 logos help others see you at dusk.
How to choose
When you ride with it on your back, a backpack must be small and snug, so choose the volume by the length of the trip, not by how much you would like to take.
Riding need Best for Models A day trip Compact, with a chest strap and welded seams: room for spare gloves, a drink and a dry layer. TARGET 1716 (20 l), TRACE 1711 (30 l) A route of several days A large volume, MOLLE webbing, a removable document compartment, chest and hip belts. RANGER 1708 (50 l) Roll-top closure A sealed welded design and durable 350 g/m² fabric, for when keeping your kit dry matters most. EXPEDITION 1730 (40 l) What they are not for
- •Heavy loads on your back. A full large backpack pulls you backwards while you stand on the footboards, so big luggage is better strapped to the sled.
- •The worst frost with EXPEDITION 1730. The maker rates its fabric only down to −10 °C.
- •Things you need often. The roll-top has to be unrolled several turns, and in thick gloves that is slow.
Frequently asked questions
Will the backpack get wet if I fall into the snow?
RANGER 1708, TRACE 1711 and TARGET 1716 have welded seams and an IP66 rating, so snow and meltwater do not seep through the seams, and the maker calls EXPEDITION 1730 sealed. The key is to close the opening properly.
Does a backpack get in the way when standing on the footboards?
Not if it is small and snug. Fasten the chest strap and adjust the shoulder straps so the backpack does not tip backwards over bumps. The 20 litre TARGET 1716 suits this best.
Which backpack should I choose for a trip of several days with overnight stays?
RANGER 1708: 50 litres, a removable document compartment, bottle pockets and MOLLE webbing for extra gear. The chest strap and removable hip belt spread the weight when you ride with the backpack on.
What is worth carrying in your backpack when snowmobiling?
Spare gloves and socks, a dry mid layer, a drink and your phone. When you get stuck and dig, your clothing gets damp from sweat, so a dry change helps you get home without getting cold.
