Which trousers should you choose for fishing and off-road?
Finntrail trousers are the lower half of your outdoor kit for fishing, ATV riding and winter trips. The range has three groups: membrane rain trousers that keep the rain out, stretchy softshell trousers for movement in dry or cool weather, and insulated warm trousers for the cold. For autumn fishing or riding an ATV in the rain, membrane rain trousers suit most people best.

How to choose
First decide what you need protection from: rain, wind and abrasion, or cold. The second question is the cut: trousers or bib trousers with braces, which also cover your back when you sit or bend. Bib trousers are found in both the rain and the warm trouser groups.

- •Wading in a river. Trousers end in open legs, so water will get inside. That is what waders are for.
- •Hot summer sun. Membrane and warm trousers are too warm then; lighter options are the UV protection trousers.
- •A long downpour in softshell trousers. Softshell is not waterproof: it repels drizzle, but a whole day in the rain calls for a membrane.
- •Work near open fire or welding. Neither the membrane nor softshell fabric is spark resistant.
Frequently asked questions
Rain or softshell trousers for autumn fishing?
If it rains for more than an hour or you sit in a wet boat, choose rain trousers with a membrane. Softshell trousers are more comfortable for moving in dry or windy weather, but they will not keep out long rain.
Trousers or bib trousers: what is the difference?
Bib trousers have braces and a higher waist, so they cover your back when you sit in a boat, on the ice or on an ATV. Trousers are quicker to put on and more comfortable when you walk more than you sit.
Can rain trousers be worn in winter?
Yes, if you wear a warm layer under them, but rain trousers themselves have no insulation. For long hours on the ice or snowmobile rides you will be warmer in insulated warm trousers.
What should I wear under Finntrail trousers?
Wear thermal underwear under your trousers: the base layer moves moisture away from the skin, the mid layer keeps you warm. How to combine them with rain or warm trousers is explained in our layering guide.
How do I choose the trouser size if I will wear thermal underwear underneath?
Measure yourself wearing the layer you will have under the trousers, and only then pick a size from the Finntrail size chart. If the size is wrong, you can return or exchange the trousers within 30 days.
