Finntrail AZIMUTH DarkGrey 1300 Softshell Pants
Stretchy softshell pants for hiking and active days outdoors: ShellStretch moves with you, RIPSTOP protects where the fabric wears. A water-repellent finish holds off short drizzle, the anatomical cut and forward-shifted side seams stay clear of your backpack belt, and five zippered pockets keep everything at hand. These are softshell pants, not a waterproof membrane layer.
Who they are for
Made for the hiker, traveller and outdoor enthusiast who wants durable pants with full freedom of movement in dry and changeable weather.
- •Hikes and trips with a backpack, where the side seam must not rub under the hip belt.
- •Everyday time outdoors, where stretch and abrasion resistance matter most.
- •Layering: wear them on their own and pull membrane rain pants over them when the rain sets in.
When they shine
They perform best in dry and changeable spring, summer and autumn, when you need durable, stretchy pants for long days on foot and plain trousers feel stiff and wear out fast. The water-repellent finish handles short drizzle, but prolonged rain calls for membrane pants.
Technical specs
Materials & technology
ShellStretch
A soft, elastic fabric placed where mobility matters. It stretches with the movement, so the pants never pull when you crouch, climb or stride.
RIPSTOP with a reinforced thread
A reinforced fabric with a stronger thread woven in. It sits in the highest-wear zones and adds protection against abrasion.
Water-repellent finish (DWR)
A thin finish on the fabric surface: drizzle and splashes bead and roll off, the fabric wets out less and dries faster. It is not a membrane, so it will not hold off prolonged rain. Renew it with an impregnation spray.
Anatomical cut
The cut follows how the body moves and the knee area is shaped ergonomically. The pants sit precisely and never shorten your stride.
Forward-shifted side seams
The seams are moved from the side toward the front, so they stay clear of a backpack hip belt and rub less on a long hike.
How they differ from plain trousers
Care
Before washing, remove the belt and close every zip. Wash up to 30 °C with a liquid wash made for outdoor clothing (e.g. Mountval Wash & Care), without softener or bleach: softener clogs the fabric and ruins the water repellency. Restore the water-repellent finish (DWR) with Mountval Textile Shield. Dry naturally, not on a radiator.
Frequently asked questions
Are the AZIMUTH pants waterproof?
No. The AZIMUTH 1300 is a softshell pant with a water-repellent finish, not a membrane garment. The finish holds off short drizzle and splashes so the fabric wets out less, but in prolonged rain it will soak through. For steady rain choose the membrane Finntrail OUTDOOR 1310 rain pants or pull them over the AZIMUTH.
What are the AZIMUTH pants made of?
A combination of two fabrics. Soft, elastic ShellStretch sits where mobility matters, and reinforced RIPSTOP with a stronger woven thread sits where the fabric takes the most abrasion. Together they give both comfort and durability.
Do they restrict movement?
They do not. The AZIMUTH pants have an anatomical cut, an ergonomically shaped knee area and a tapered silhouette, while the elastic ShellStretch stretches with you when crouching, climbing or striding.
How many pockets are there?
Five, all with zips: two side pockets with mesh lining, two patch thigh pockets and one rear pocket. The mesh in the side pockets lets air move, so what you carry there stays fresher.
Do they work with a backpack, and is the belt removable?
Yes. The side seams are shifted forward exactly so they do not sit under a backpack hip belt. The supplied belt with its sturdy plastic buckle is removable, and the waist closes with a button and a zip.

How to Choose the Correct FINNTRAIL Men's Pants Size
Choosing the correct pants size ensures comfort, freedom of movement and optimal performance during outdoor activities. Pants that are too small may feel tight around the waist or hips and restrict movement, while pants that are too large may slide down, interfere with walking and reduce overall comfort.
The FINNTRAIL size chart shows body measurements, not garment measurements. FINNTRAIL pants are designed with additional room for mobility, comfort and layering when needed.
Measure Your Height
Height is one of the key measurements when choosing men's pants, as it helps determine overall fit and leg length. Measure your height while standing upright without shoes.
How to measure: stand straight with your feet together and measure from the floor to the top of your head.Measure Your Waist
Measure your waist at its narrowest point or where you normally wear your pants. The measuring tape should fit comfortably around your body without being too tight.
Important: do not suck in your stomach or tighten the tape excessively. Pants should allow comfortable movement, sitting and layering.Measure Your Hips
Measure around the fullest part of your hips. This measurement is particularly important because pants should allow unrestricted movement while walking, climbing, sitting or engaging in outdoor activities.
Recommendation: if your hip measurement falls into a larger size than your waist measurement, choose the size according to your hips.Measure Your Inseam
Inseam is measured from the crotch down to the inside of the ankle. This measurement helps determine whether the pants will provide the proper leg length for your height.
If you plan to wear taller boots or use the pants for active outdoor activities, ensuring the correct inseam length is especially important.
How to Use the Size Chart
Measurement Description Height Body height in centimeters. Waist Waist circumference. Hips Hip circumference measured around the fullest part of the hips. Inseam Inside leg length from crotch to ankle. Start by checking your waist and hip measurements. Then confirm that the selected size matches your height and inseam. If one measurement falls into a larger size category, it is generally recommended to choose the larger size.

S M L XLStandard sizes for men with average body proportions.
MLExtended length size for taller users whose waist and hip measurements correspond to size M.
SK MK LK XLKWider sizes designed for larger waist and hip measurements.
XXL XXXLLarger sizes for taller or broader body types.
If You Are Between Two Sizes
If your measurements fall between two sizes, choose according to how the pants will be used. For active outdoor use, the fabric should never feel tight across the waist, hips or knees.
- If your hips fall into a larger size category than your waist, choose according to your hip measurement.
- If you plan to wear thermal layers underneath, allow extra room.
- If you are taller than average, pay special attention to inseam length.
- For active use, avoid choosing pants that fit too tightly.
Important: technical pants should not be overly tight. Fabric under constant tension wears faster, restricts movement and reduces overall comfort.Recommendation Before Ordering
Before ordering FINNTRAIL men's pants, measure your height, waist, hips and inseam accurately. Take measurements while wearing a thin base layer or clothing similar to what you plan to wear underneath the pants.
Best results: provide your height, waist circumference, hip circumference and inseam measurement. These measurements allow the most accurate FINNTRAIL size recommendation.Summary
To choose the correct FINNTRAIL men's pants size, the most important measurements are height, waist circumference, hip circumference and inseam length. The correct size ensures comfort, freedom of movement, effective layering and long-lasting performance.

Membrane waterproofing and breathability
Membrane fabric is usually described using two numbers, often separated by a slash: waterproofness and breathability. The first number indicates waterproofness, the second indicates breathability.
?Waterproofing
This is a sliding scale measured in mm that shows how high a column of water you can suspend over the membrane before it starts to let moisture through.
Waterproof Rating Conditions 0–10,000 mm Light rain, dry snow, light pressure. 11,000–15,000 mm Moderate rain, average snow, light pressure. 16,000–20,000 mm Heavy rain, wet snow, some pressure. 20,000 mm+ Heavy rain, wet snow, high pressure. ?Breathability
This is the amount of moisture by weight that can pass through one square metre of fabric over a period of 24 hours. It is commonly measured in g/m²/24 hrs.
Breathability Rating Level of Breathability 0–5,000 g/m²/24 hrs Low – light exercise. 5,000–15,000 g/m²/24 hrs Medium – medium to high energy activity. 15,000 g/m²/24 hrs+ High – vigorous sustained activity.
