Can the RAVEN 9725 balaclava be worn without a helmet?
Yes. RAVEN 9725 was designed for snowmobiles, but its windproof fabric protects both your face and neck, so it is also useful by the hole in strong wind. You can put a hat or hood on over it.
Why is it worth having a spare hat on the ice?
While drilling a hole or walking with gear, your hat gets damp with sweat, and a wet hat chills you in the wind. A second, dry hat in your backpack lets you change when you sit down to fish.
How does HAT WATERPROOF 9714 differ from WATERPROOFHAT 9711?
Model 9714 has a HARD-TEX membrane and a fleece inside, so your head stays dry and warm in sleet on the ice. The 9711 is a light hat made of stretchy water resistant fabric, made for cooler weather without severe cold.
Is the suit hood enough without a hat?
When sitting for long, usually not. The hood keeps the wind off, but air remains between it and your head, so it is warmer when you wear a hat or balaclava underneath. Pull the hood up when the wind picks up.
