Finntrail · Winter fishing boots
Which boots will keep your feet from freezing on the ice?
Finntrail warm winter fishing boots are made for standing and sitting on the ice for hours on end, when your feet hardly move. Both models have a removable inner boot with 1,200 g insulation, a HARD-TEX membrane and a sole with an EVA layer that reduces cold transfer from the ice. TOURING 5230 tightens with laces and hook and loop straps, while BLIZZARD ATOP 5234 uses a dial you can turn even with gloves on.
How to choose, when they are not the right fit, and FAQ
Who they are for
- •Long hours sitting by the hole, when cold rises through your soles: the thick inner boot and EVA midsole separate your foot from the ice.
- •Wet snow and puddles on the ice during a thaw: the membrane keeps moisture from getting in.
- •A trip of several days: in the evening you take out the inner boot and dry it separately, so you put on a dry one in the morning.
- •Walking on packed snow and icy tracks: TOURING 5230 has a non-slip rubber sole reinforced at the heel.
How to choose
Both models are similarly warm: the manufacturer’s limit for both is −75 °C. The difference is the closure and what the boot is primarily designed for.
How you reach your spot Why this boot Models On foot, lots of walking on the ice Laces and hook and loop straps hold the ankle firmly, with Achilles tendon and ankle support. TOURING 5230 By snowmobile, often putting boots on with gloves One turn of the ATOP dial tightens the boot, and rubber at the toe and heel protects against knocks. BLIZZARD ATOP 5234 When these boots are not the right fit
- •Standing in water. The membrane protects against wet snow, but these are not rubber boots: if you often wade through water on the ice, look at snow boots with a rubber galosh.
- •A long hike without snow. Boots with a thick inner boot are heavier and warmer than an autumn trail needs.
- •Spring ice when it is warm. In a boot that is too warm your foot sweats, and a damp foot later gets cold fast.
Frequently asked questions
Why do my feet get cold on the ice even in warm boots?
Usually the socks or a boot that is too tight are to blame. Wear warm wool socks, for example EXTREME MERINO 3203, and leave room for your toes to move: a squeezed foot gets cold faster even in the warmest boot.
How do I dry boots during a fishing trip of several days?
In the evening, pull out the inner boot and dry it at room temperature separately from the outer boot. Do not put it next to a stove, fire or radiator, as too much heat can damage the boot.
What size should I choose if I will wear thick socks?
Try them on with the socks you will wear on the ice. Your toes should move freely, because in a tight boot circulation suffers and the foot gets cold. BLIZZARD ATOP 5234 comes in sizes 40 to 46.
Does warmth depend on whether you sit or walk?
Yes. The manufacturer’s stated limit is what the boot can do, not a promise for everyone: sitting still, your feet get cold faster than when walking. When sitting for long, rest your feet on a mat or box, not directly on the ice.
