Which boots should you choose?
Finntrail boots fall into four groups according to how you deal with water and cold. Wading boots go over the neoprene sock of your waders and let water out through drainage, membrane hiking boots keep your feet dry on the trail, snow boots keep you warm in hard frost, and rubber boots keep water out in the mud. First decide whether you will stand in water.
How to choose, who they are not for, and FAQ
Who they are for
- •Anglers who wade in a river or lake in waders: wading boots go over the neoprene sock, and water does not collect in them.
- •ATV riders and off-road: a tough sole and a high shaft support the ankle in mud and fords.
- •Hiking and travel: membrane hiking boots with a HARD-TEX membrane keep water out and let sweat escape.
- •Ice fishing and snowmobiles: snow boots with a removable inner boot or a warm liner.
How to choose
The first question: should the boot let water out or keep it out? Wading boots and draining hiking shoes let water out, while membrane, snow and rubber boots keep it out. The second question is warmth.

DECK 7518, OUTLANDER 7516, EDGE 7520 When to choose another group
- •Wading boots are not watertight: water gets in and drains out. It is the neoprene sock of the waders that keeps you dry, so without waders your feet will get wet.
- •Rubber boots are not suitable over the neoprene socks of waders: they are not designed for it and do not keep sand or mud from getting inside. That is what wading boots are for.
- •Membrane hiking boots are not for wading deeper than the shaft: water that runs in over the top stays inside. For fords choose wading boots with waders.
- •Snow boots are designed for hard frost, so for a cool autumn and long walks insulated hiking boots are more comfortable.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between wading boots and rubber boots?
Wading boots let water out through drainage and go over the neoprene sock of your waders, while rubber boots keep water out and are worn with an ordinary sock. For wading in waders choose wading boots, for mud choose rubber boots.
What size boots should I buy?
Go by your usual size and the size guide, and take wading boots one size larger, because the neoprene sock goes inside them. If the size is wrong, you can return or exchange the boots within 30 days.
Which boots should I choose for ATV riding?
If you cross fords in waders, choose wading boots with a rubber sole, such as WADEMAN 5203. If you do not wear waders, the OUTLANDER 7516 rubber boots or membrane hiking boots suit mud and rain.
Are hiking boots suitable for winter?
Most Finntrail hiking boots are three-season boots without insulation. For the cold season there are the insulated FORCE 5174 and ROVER 5175, and for hard frost choose snow boots.
How do I care for boots so they last longer?
After use rinse off the mud with clean water and dry them at room temperature, not by a radiator or a fire. Treat membrane boots from time to time with products from the footwear impregnation sprays section.
