Which warm suit should you choose for winter?
Finntrail warm suits are winter membrane gear for snowmobile riding and ice fishing. The range includes two-piece suits, one-piece overalls, models with F.I.L.L. flotation technology and uninsulated overalls for layering. If you sit on the ice a lot, an insulated two-piece suit suits most people best, while for active riding a one-piece overall is the better pick.

Who they are for
- •Ice anglers who sit in one spot for hours on end: NORDY 3757 and ESCAPE 3756 are insulated for temperatures down to −40 °C.
- •Snowmobile riders: WIDETRACK 3852 and BLIZZARD 3856 are one-piece, and POWERMAN 3752 has D-rings for a safety line.
- •Riding or fishing on thin ice: FLOAT 3902 and ESCAPE 3756 have F.I.L.L. flotation technology.
- •For women there are the ATLAS W 3460 suit and the RACHEL 3853 overall.
How to choose
First decide how much you will move. Sitting on the ice you need more insulation, while riding a snowmobile actively makes it easier to overheat. The manufacturer’s ratings in this group run from −20 °C (RACHEL 3853, ATLAS W 3460) to −40 °C (NORDY 3757, ESCAPE 3756).

- •Intense activity such as climbing or running. The insulation will be too warm and sweat will build up; choose an uninsulated BACKCOUNTRY overall instead.
- •Spring and autumn rain. In an insulated suit you will overheat above freezing; that is what rain suits are for.
- •Swimming. F.I.L.L. technology is extra flotation help, not a life jacket.
- •Work near open fire or welding. Neither the membrane nor the insulation is spark resistant.
Frequently asked questions
What does “down to −30 °C” mean on a suit?
It is an indicative limit set by the manufacturer, assuming you wear suitable layers under the suit. Real warmth also depends on wind, movement and your underlayers, so for long hours sitting on the ice in the wind it pays to choose a model with some margin.
Is an uninsulated overall suitable for winter?
It suits active riding: BACKCOUNTRY 3901 is made for temperatures down to −20 °C with warm underlayers. The membrane keeps out snow and wind, and you choose the warmth yourself, so you do not overheat when riding hard.
What is F.I.L.L. flotation technology?
It is a flotation system that helps you stay afloat if you fall through thin ice. In the ESCAPE 3756 suit it consists of a film layer and two rescue handles. It does not replace a life jacket.
What is a drop seat for?
A drop seat means you do not have to take off the whole overall or bib trousers when you need the toilet. It is handy on a long day on the ice or on the trail. BACKCOUNTRY 3901, BACKCOUNTRY 3903 and POWERMAN 3752 Graphite have one.
Is a warm overall suitable for ATV riding in winter?
Yes. EVOLUTION 3812 and BACKCOUNTRY 3901 are made for both snowmobiles and ATVs, and the reinforced knees and seat withstand rubbing on the seat and mud. For long hours on a cold ATV choose the insulated EVOLUTION 3812.
