Which impregnation product should you choose for your boots?
Mountval footwear impregnation sprays restore the water and dirt repellency of the boot surface, so leather, suede and nubuck no longer soak up moisture. The range has two types: Mountval Protector 300 ml with an aerosol-free pump spray, and the colourless Mountval Waterproof aerosol in 200 or 400 ml, which also suits clothing. For everyday hiking boots Protector is the most convenient for most people.
How to choose, what they are not for, and FAQ
What they are for
- •Protecting new hiking, work or town boots before their first rainy day.
- •Suede and nubuck boots on which water starts soaking in and the surface darkens.
- •Membrane footwear: both products are made for items with membranes and act on the outer surface.
- •When you also care for a jacket or hat: Mountval Waterproof suits textiles too.
How to choose
Suitable for: smooth and synthetic leather, suede, nubuck, microfibre (Protector), textiles (Waterproof) and membrane footwear. Not suitable for: patent leather, a dirty surface, a damaged membrane and split seams. Check the label and test in an inconspicuous spot: brightly coloured suede and nubuck, light leather, unusual factory finishes.
Product Best for Model Aerosol-free spray Regular care of everyday hiking footwear in leather, suede, nubuck and microfibre. Spray from about 15 cm. Mountval Protector 300 ml Aerosol for boots and clothing When you want one product for boots and clothing; also protects against grease stains. Spray from about 20 cm. Mountval Waterproof 200 ml Large pack The same Waterproof formula, when you care for several pairs or larger surfaces. Mountval Waterproof 400 ml What they are not for
- •Impregnation does not make boots waterproof: waterproofness comes from the boot’s construction and membrane, not the surface coating.
- •Neither product is suitable for patent leather: the sealed finish does not absorb the product, and marks may remain.
- •Do not clean off dirt with impregnation. First clean the boots with a footwear cleaner and let them dry.
- •Impregnation will not seal a leaking boot or fix a sole coming unstuck: that is what footwear repair adhesives are for.
Frequently asked questions
How does Mountval Protector differ from Waterproof?
Mountval Protector is applied with an aerosol-free pump spray and is made for footwear only. Mountval Waterproof is an aerosol that suits both boots and textiles, and it also protects against grease stains.
Will impregnation change the colour of suede?
The manufacturer states that Mountval Waterproof does not change the natural colour, but factory finishes vary. Test brightly coloured suede, nubuck and light leather in an inconspicuous spot first.
From what distance should I spray boot impregnation?
Spray Mountval Protector from about 15 cm and Waterproof from about 20 cm. Cover the whole surface including the seams and the edge of the sole, and use the aerosol only in a well ventilated place.
When can I wear my boots after impregnation?
Only once they are completely dry: that is the manufacturer’s instruction for both products. Dry them at room temperature, away from radiators, because direct heat can deform leather.
