Which warm boots should you wear on a winter trip?

- •A fast, long hike on an easy trail. The double construction with an inner boot is made for warmth, so do not expect the feel of a light boot.
- •Wading through a thawed stream deeper than the boot top. The membrane keeps out snow and moisture, but water running in over the top will soak the inner boot.
Frequently asked questions
Are boots rated to −75 °C worth buying if it never gets that cold in Lithuania?
Yes, if you stand or sit outdoors for long: when you do not move, your feet cool faster, so the warmth margin helps even at −15 °C. Warmth also depends on your socks and how much you move during the day.
Why does an EVA layer in the sole of warm boots matter?
The EVA layer blocks the cold rising from frozen ground and snow, so your feet cool more slowly when you stand still. In TOURING 5230 the EVA midsole also cushions your step, and the BLIZZARD ATOP 5234 sole has such a layer too.
How does TOURING 5230 differ from BLIZZARD ATOP 5234?
The warmth and protection figures are the same: a HARD-TEX membrane, a removable inner boot with 1,200 g of insulation and a limit of −75 °C. The difference is the closure: TOURING tightens with laces and hook and loop straps, BLIZZARD ATOP with a turn of the dial.
What should I wear with warm boots on a winter trip?
Combine warm boots with thermal underwear and a warm suit: the trouser hem should cover the boot top so snow does not get in. For your hands and face, take warm gloves and a balaclava.
