Finntrail WATERPROOFCAP Graphite 9621 Membrane Cap
A membrane cap that stays on your head through rain and wind alike. The Finntrail WATERPROOFCAP 9621 is built from a durable three-layer fabric with a membrane, and its seams are fully taped, so rain and wind stay outside while sweat vapour gets out. A firm curved brim keeps sun and rain off your eyes, a plastic adjuster at the back sets the fit in seconds, and the embroidered brand logo is taped on the inside so no stitching presses on your forehead. One size, colour Graphite.
Who it is for
Made for the hiker, traveller and angler who is outdoors in any weather and wants a cap that will not go soggy in the rain.
- •Hiking and trekking when the weather is changeable and rain can hit any moment.
- •Fishing and the outdoors, when you need to shield your eyes from sun and your head from rain and wind.
- •Everyday city wear and travel, when you want one cap for the whole warm and cool season.
When it shines
It performs best on a rainy, windy day outdoors: the membrane with fully taped seams keeps water from coming through, the brim sheds drops away from your face, and the fabric still breathes, so your head does not overheat the way it does under plain plastic.
Technical specs
Materials & technology
Three-layer fabric with a membrane
A membrane sits between the outer and inner layer: it holds back rainwater and wind from outside yet lets sweat vapour escape from inside. The three-layer build also adds abrasion resistance, so the cap keeps its shape for longer.
Fully taped seams
Taped strips cover the rows of needle holes from the inside. Seams are exactly where a cheap cap wets through first, so taping is what lets the WATERPROOFCAP 9621 take a heavy shower.
Firm curved brim
The stiff curved brim sheds raindrops away from your face and shields your eyes from the sun and from glare off the water. On the water that matters in practice: eyes tire first.
Plastic adjuster and taped logo
A sturdy plastic fastener at the back sets the circumference quickly, so one size fits most adults. The embroidered logo is taped on the inside so the stitching never touches your forehead.
How it differs from an ordinary cap
Care
Hand wash up to 30 °C with a dedicated membrane wash (e.g. Mountval Wash & Care), without softener or bleach: gentle washing protects the membrane and the taped seams. If the surface stops shedding water and starts soaking it up, restore the water repellency with Mountval Textile Shield. Dry at room temperature, not on a radiator, so the brim keeps its shape.
Frequently asked questions
Does the Finntrail WATERPROOFCAP 9621 keep the rain out?
Yes. The three-layer fabric with a membrane and the fully taped seams hold back rain and wind, and the manufacturer states a water resistance of 5,000 mm. It is protection from rain and wind, not a sealed hood: standing under a heavy downpour for a long time, moisture can eventually work in through the adjuster opening.
Does the cap breathe, or will my head sweat?
It breathes: the manufacturer states a breathability of 5,000 g/m²/24h. The membrane lets sweat vapour out while holding rain off, so on a hike or in active movement your head does not heat up the way it does under plain plastic.
What size is it and can it be adjusted?
The Finntrail WATERPROOFCAP 9621 comes in one size. A sturdy plastic adjuster at the back sets the fit in seconds, and the cap stays put even in a windy boat.
What is this cap not suitable for?
It is not made for deep winter: there is no fleece lining and no insulation inside, so in the cold it protects only from water and wind but does not warm you. For a cold, wet season choose an insulated membrane beanie with a fleece lining.
How do I care for a membrane cap?
Hand wash up to 30 °C with Mountval Wash & Care, without softener or bleach, and restore the water repellency with Mountval Textile Shield when needed. Dry at room temperature, not on a radiator. Proper care keeps both the rain protection and the breathability.

Membrane waterproofing and breathability
Membrane fabric is usually described using two numbers, often separated by a slash: waterproofness and breathability. The first number indicates waterproofness, the second indicates breathability.
?Waterproofing
This is a sliding scale measured in mm that shows how high a column of water you can suspend over the membrane before it starts to let moisture through.
Waterproof Rating Conditions 0–10,000 mm Light rain, dry snow, light pressure. 11,000–15,000 mm Moderate rain, average snow, light pressure. 16,000–20,000 mm Heavy rain, wet snow, some pressure. 20,000 mm+ Heavy rain, wet snow, high pressure. ?Breathability
This is the amount of moisture by weight that can pass through one square metre of fabric over a period of 24 hours. It is commonly measured in g/m²/24 hrs.
Breathability Rating Level of Breathability 0–5,000 g/m²/24 hrs Low – light exercise. 5,000–15,000 g/m²/24 hrs Medium – medium to high energy activity. 15,000 g/m²/24 hrs+ High – vigorous sustained activity.
