What size backpack should you take on the water?

Finntrail backpacks for the water are chosen by volume and closure. There are 20 and 30 litre backpacks for a day, 40 and 50 litre ones for overnight trips, a 2 litre belt bag and MUDBAG bags for wet clothing. EXPEDITION 1730 has a roll-top closure, and three have an IP66 rating: the 50 litre RANGER 1708, the 30 litre TRACE 1711 and the 20 litre TARGET 1716. For a day in a kayak, 20 litres usually does.

How to choose, who they are not for, and FAQ

    Who they are for

    • •A day on the water when you only take dry clothes, water and a snack: the 20 litre TARGET 1716 is enough for that.
    • •Paddlers who dislike a load bouncing on their back: the ergonomic shoulder straps and chest straps of TRACE 1711 keep the backpack snug.
    • •Anglers in a boat who want every small item in its place: RANGER 1708 has a removable inner compartment, a key clip and side pockets for bottles.
    • •Paddling at dusk: the TRACE 1711 logos reflect light, so you are easier to spot from the bank or another boat.

    How to choose

First work out how much you will take, then how often you will get things out. A roll-top closes tightly, but takes longer to open.

What these backpacks are not for

    • •Getting things out every few minutes. The top of EXPEDITION 1730 has to be unrolled, so for small items close at hand BELTBAG 1726 is more convenient.
    • •Keeping kit in the water. A backpack protects its contents above the water, and the submersion the IP66 models withstand is brief.
    • •MUDBAG BIG 1734 as a dry bag. Its specification lists welded seams and a wipe clean fabric, but no water protection rating at all.

    Frequently asked questions

Is a 20 litre backpack enough for a day in a kayak?

Yes, if you take dry clothes, water and a snack. If you also carry a camera, tackle boxes or a warm layer for a cool day, choose the 30 litre TRACE 1711.

What is the difference between EXPEDITION 1730 and RANGER 1708?

EXPEDITION 1730 is a simpler 40 litre backpack with a roll-top closure and 350 g/m² fabric. RANGER 1708 has 50 litres, an IP66 rating, MOLLE webbing, an opening for a landing net and a removable document pouch.

Does a roll-top backpack protect better than one with a zip?

The maker calls EXPEDITION 1730 sealed, because the welded seams and roll-top closure form a tight interior, but it gives no IP rating. IP66 protection backed by a figure is found on the 20, 30 and 50 litre models.

Can I take the backpack paddling in late autumn?

According to the maker, the EXPEDITION 1730 fabric can be used down to −10 °C, so you can take this backpack on cold boat fishing trips too. No temperature limit is stated for the other models.
