How do you keep your kit dry in a boat or kayak?
For water sports, Finntrail offers backpacks and bags that protect your kit from spray and rain in a boat, a kayak or on a paddleboard. Right now you will find 20, 30, 40 and 50 litre backpacks here, a small belt bag and two MUDBAG bags for wet clothing. TARGET 1716, TRACE 1711 and RANGER 1708 have an IP66 rating: they float and withstand brief submersion. For a day on the water TARGET 1716 is enough for most people.
How to choose, who it is not for, and FAQ
Who it is for
- •Kayakers: spray dripping off the paddle does not seep through the welded seams of TARGET 1716 and TRACE 1711, so the backpack can lie by your feet.
- •Fishing from a boat: RANGER 1708 has an opening for a landing net and MOLLE webbing to attach extra gear.
- •On a paddleboard or the bank: BELTBAG 1726 keeps your keys and a snack on your waist, and for your phone it is worth having a separate waterproof case.
- •Once you are back on shore: put wet clothes and boots into MUDBAG 1722, so the car stays dry.
How to choose
Start with where the backpack will be while you are on the water: on your back, in the bottom of the boat or on the bank. Then think about how much you are taking.
Situation Worth knowing Models A day in a kayak or on a paddleboard Dry clothes, water and a snack. An IP66 backpack with a chest strap does not bounce on your back. TARGET 1716, TRACE 1711 Fishing from a boat Lots of small items and a landing net: inner compartments and attachment webbing come in handy. RANGER 1708 A paddling trip of several days with overnight stays Your sleeping kit has to stay dry: 40 litres and a roll-top closure. EXPEDITION 1730 Small items close at hand Keys and a snack on your waist. Rain and spray are no problem for it, but submersion is too much. BELTBAG 1726 The trip home Soaked clothes, boots and muddy gear go into a separate bag with welded seams. MUDBAG 1722, MUDBAG BIG 1734 What it is not for
- •Diving or swimming with your kit under water. Even the specifications of the IP66 models only speak of brief submersion.
- •As a life saving device. A floating backpack does not replace a life jacket.
- •Clothing against spray. This collection currently has only backpacks and bags; look for jackets in the rain jackets category.
Frequently asked questions
Can I leave the backpack in the bottom of the boat where water collects?
Briefly, yes, if it is an IP66 model. The specifications of TARGET 1716, TRACE 1711 and RANGER 1708 state that they float and withstand brief submersion, but do not leave them in standing water for long.
What happens if the backpack falls out of the kayak?
The IP66 models float, so you will have time to grab them, and they withstand brief submersion. No buoyancy is stated for EXPEDITION 1730, BELTBAG 1726 or the MUDBAG bags, so it is better to tie them to the boat.
Where should I keep my phone on a paddleboard?
In a waterproof case, and that case in an IP66 backpack. BELTBAG 1726 is handy for keys and a snack on your waist, but its design is made for rain and spray, not for submersion.
Is a MUDBAG worth taking in the boat?
MUDBAG is not made for the water but for the trip back: you put wet clothes, waders and boots into it. MUDBAG 1722 has welded seams and a water resistant design, so moisture does not get into the boot of your car.
