Finntrail TACTIC Graphite 5170 Hiking Boots
Hiking boots with a HARD-TEX® membrane and an aggressive rubber tread: a dry foot and a solid step in mud, rocks and on a climb. The Finntrail TACTIC Graphite 5170 boots are built from OXFORD fabric with a polyurethane coating over a HARD-TEX membrane, so moisture stays out while sweat gets out. The rubber sole with its deep pattern bites into mud and wet ground, rubber reinforcements at the toe and heel take the impacts, and the high shaft with a gusseted tongue keeps sand and dirt from getting in. The anatomical insole and EVA midsole keep the foot comfortable all day.
Who they are for
Made for hiking, hunting and fishing, when the day is long and the route runs through mud, rocks and hills.
- •Hiking and travelling over uneven terrain.
- •Hunting and fishing along the shore.
- •Everyday time outdoors when you need dry feet and ankle support.
When they shine
Best on a wet, muddy day: the HARD-TEX membrane keeps water out, the aggressive tread bites on descents and climbs, and the gusseted tongue stops sand and dirt from spilling inside.
Technical specs
Materials & technology
HARD-TEX membrane
The membrane keeps rain and wet grass out but lets vapour escape from inside, so over a long day the foot stays dry from both directions.
OXFORD fabric with a polyurethane coating
The dense coated fabric survives abrasion, scratches from branches and mud, so the boot does not wear out in a single season.
Aggressive rubber tread
The deep sole pattern bites into mud and wet ground and holds on a steep descent or climb, where a flat sole starts to slide.
High shaft and gusseted tongue
The tall build fixes the ankle and reduces the risk of a twist, while the stitched-in tongue stops sand, dust and mud from getting inside.
Anatomical insole and EVA midsole
The anatomical insole with an EVA midsole absorbs impact and supports the arch, so a long hike tires you less.
How they differ from ordinary trainers outdoors
Care
After a trip rinse the mud off with clean water, especially the tread and the seams. Once dry, spray the boots with an impregnator (Mountval Protector) so water beads off again. Dry at room temperature or in a boot dryer on low, not near a radiator: heat damages the membrane and the glue. Odour inside is handled by a spray (Mountval Odour Absorber).
Frequently asked questions
Are the TACTIC 5170 boots waterproof?
They have a HARD-TEX membrane and the outer is OXFORD fabric with a polyurethane coating, so rain and wet grass stay outside. The manufacturer does not state a water column figure for this model, so we do not publish one.
Can I wade in them?
No, these are hiking boots. Water will still come in over the top of the shaft. For wading choose wading boots, worn together with waders.
Does the sole hold on wet stones?
The rubber sole with its aggressive tread holds in mud, on grass and on uneven ground. On an algae covered river stone a felt sole holds better, and that is what the GREENWOOD model has.
Is there ankle support?
Yes, the shaft is high, there is soft padding around the ankle, and rubber reinforcements at the toe and heel protect against impacts.
How do I care for the membrane so it lasts?
Rinse the mud off with clean water and spray the dry boots with an impregnator (Mountval Protector). Odour inside is handled by a spray (Mountval Odour Absorber); dry at room temperature, not near a radiator.

How to Choose the Correct FINNTRAIL Men's Footwear Size
Choosing the correct footwear size is important not only for comfort but also for safety. Boots that are too small may compress the foot, restrict circulation, and cause discomfort, while oversized footwear may reduce stability, create friction, and make walking in water or mud more difficult.
FINNTRAIL wading boots are designed to accommodate both the neoprene stockingfoot of waders and a medium-thickness sock. Therefore, sizing should be selected according to your actual foot length in centimeters, rather than your everyday shoe size.
Measure Your Foot Length
Measure the length of your foot from the heel to the tip of your longest toe. It is recommended to take measurements in the evening, when feet are naturally slightly larger after daily activity.
How to measure: stand on a sheet of paper, mark the position of your heel and longest toe, then measure the distance between these points in centimeters. If one foot is slightly longer than the other, always use the measurement of the longer foot.
Select Your Size Using the Chart
Compare your measured foot length with the FINNTRAIL size chart. For example, if your foot length is 28 cm, the recommended size is 43 (10).
EU / US Size Foot Length, cm 38 (5) 23 39 (6) 24 40 (7) 25 41 (8) 26 42 (9) 27 43 (10) 28 44 (11) 29 45 (12) 30 46 (13) 31 47 (14) 32 Why Are FINNTRAIL Wading Boots Sized Differently?
Wading boots are not ordinary everyday footwear. They are designed to be worn together with waders that feature neoprene stockingfeet. Therefore, the boot must provide sufficient space for both the neoprene stockingfoot and a medium-thickness sock.
Important: FINNTRAIL wading boots are already designed to account for the thickness of neoprene stockingfeet. There is no need to order a larger size than indicated by your actual foot length.Oversizing excessively may reduce foot support, decrease stability, and increase friction during walking.
When Should You Choose a Larger Size?
A larger size may be appropriate only in certain situations.
- If your foot length falls between two sizes.
- If you have particularly wide feet.
- If you plan to wear thicker thermal socks in cold weather.
- If the boots will be used for long-distance walking and additional room is preferred.
Recommendation: if you are between two sizes, it is generally better to choose the larger option, but avoid sizing up more than necessary.Note About Wet Wading Shoes
Wet wading shoes may fit approximately 1.5 sizes larger than standard footwear. When selecting this type of footwear, always consider the specific model and intended use.
Note: this recommendation applies specifically to wet wading shoes. Standard FINNTRAIL wading boots should be selected according to the foot length chart above.Recommendation Before Ordering
Before placing your order, measure your foot length in centimeters and compare it with the size chart. If you will be wearing the boots with waders, wet wading socks, or thermal socks, consider the complete layering system when choosing your size.
Best results: provide your foot length in centimeters and specify whether the boots will be worn with waders, wet wading socks, or thicker thermal socks.Summary
To choose the correct FINNTRAIL men's footwear size, the most important measurement is your foot length in centimeters. FINNTRAIL wading boots are already designed to accommodate neoprene stockingfeet, so there is no need to increase your size unnecessarily. If your measurement falls between two sizes or you have wider feet, choosing the larger size may provide a better fit.
Wading Boots Care
Wading boots are constantly exposed to moisture, sand, mud and abrasion from rocks. Proper care helps maintain their durability, grip and comfort.
Cleaning After Use
After every fishing trip, rinse the boots with clean water to remove mud, sand and small stones that may damage the material or seams.
If the boots were used in saltwater or extremely muddy conditions, rinse them thoroughly.
Washing the Boots
If the boots are heavily soiled, clean them by hand using water and a soft brush. Machine washing is not recommended.
If necessary, use specialized cleaning products designed for technical outdoor footwear.
Proper Drying
After washing or use, allow the boots to dry naturally at room temperature with the insoles removed.
Avoid drying them on radiators or using hot air heaters.
Regular Care
Regular cleaning and proper drying help maintain grip on slippery rocks, stability in water and comfort during long fishing trips.

Membrane waterproofing and breathability
Membrane fabric is usually described using two numbers, often separated by a slash: waterproofness and breathability. The first number indicates waterproofness, the second indicates breathability.
?Waterproofing
This is a sliding scale measured in mm that shows how high a column of water you can suspend over the membrane before it starts to let moisture through.
Waterproof Rating Conditions 0–10,000 mm Light rain, dry snow, light pressure. 11,000–15,000 mm Moderate rain, average snow, light pressure. 16,000–20,000 mm Heavy rain, wet snow, some pressure. 20,000 mm+ Heavy rain, wet snow, high pressure. ?Breathability
This is the amount of moisture by weight that can pass through one square metre of fabric over a period of 24 hours. It is commonly measured in g/m²/24 hrs.
Breathability Rating Level of Breathability 0–5,000 g/m²/24 hrs Low – light exercise. 5,000–15,000 g/m²/24 hrs Medium – medium to high energy activity. 15,000 g/m²/24 hrs+ High – vigorous sustained activity.
