What should you wear under a membrane for a long day on a quad?
Thermal clothing for quad riding holds warmth when you ride in the wind and stop often, and wicks sweat after a stretch spent fighting the handlebars. The base layer next to the skin (synthetic ALL SEASON 6206 and THERMO S 6304, or wool MERINO 6209) manages moisture, and the mid layer, a fleece or MASTER jacket, keeps you warm. In a cool autumn most riders need only THERMO S 6304 and POLAR JACKET 1391 under a rain suit.
How to choose, who it is not for, and FAQ
Who it is for
- •Riding into a headwind: sitting in the saddle, your body moves less than when walking and the wind chills you, so you need a warm mid layer under the membrane.
- •When you alternate between struggling in a mud hole and sitting still: the base layer wicks sweat so you do not get chilled when you stop.
- •Your legs under waders or rain trousers: POLAR 1400 with softshell inserts at the knees and SHERPA 1402 with a reinforced seat.
- •When the quad takes you to hunting or fishing and stands there for a long time: the MASTER 1512 vest warms your torso while your arms stay free.
How to choose
Choose from the skin outwards. The manufacturer rates THERMO S and MERINO underwear down to −25 °C, and ALL SEASON down to −15 °C. Add the mid layer according to the weather and how long you will be standing.
Need When it works best Models Base layer for active riding When you work the handlebars hard and sweat: seamless, antibacterial, dries quickly. ALL SEASON 6206 Base layer for cold weather For late autumn and winter in the saddle: a microfleece inside or pure merino wool. THERMO S 6304, MERINO 6209 A warm top under the jacket On a cool day under a rain suit: Polartec fleece breathes, while MASTER jackets are light and pack into a bag on the rack. POLAR JACKET 1391, POLAR W 1396 (women’s), MASTER 1509, MASTER HOOD 1504 and 1510, MASTER HYBRID 1507 Legs and torso Trousers under waders or rain trousers, and a vest when your arms need freedom. POLAR 1400, SHERPA 1402, MASTER 1512 (vest) Who thermal clothing is not for
- •A rainy day on its own. Fleece and underwear do not keep out water, so when riding always wear a rain suit over them.
- •With a cotton T-shirt underneath. Cotton holds on to sweat, and when you stop at a ford you cool down quickly.
- •Dressing too warmly before a hard stretch. Once you heat up you will sweat, so it is better to keep the MASTER jacket in a bag and put it on when you stop.
Frequently asked questions
Is thermal underwear worth wearing if I only ride for a couple of hours?
It is, if it is cooler than +10 °C outside. Even a short ride in the wind chills you, and if you sweat in a mud hole without a base layer you get cold fast when you stop. For milder weather ALL SEASON 6206 is enough.
Fleece or a MASTER jacket under a rain suit?
The Polartec fleece POLAR JACKET 1391 breathes and suits you when you move a lot. MASTER jackets are lighter, have a DWR coating and pack down small, so they are handy to carry in a bag and put on when you stop.
Which thermal trousers will withstand rubbing on the quad seat?
POLAR 1400 has softshell inserts at the knees, while SHERPA 1402 is reinforced at the knees and seat. Both are worn under waders or rain trousers, and on their own on a cool morning by the quad.
What temperatures are MASTER jackets made for?
According to the manufacturer, MASTER 1509 suits +15 to −10 °C, the hooded MASTER HOOD 1510 and 1504 +10 to −15 °C, and MASTER HYBRID 1507 roughly +15 to −5 °C. In colder weather they need a warm outer layer on top.
