Which thermal clothing should you choose?

Finntrail thermal clothing is the two layers under your outerwear. The base layer is worn right next to the skin and moves sweat away from it, while the mid layer, made of fleece or synthetic insulation, holds in the warmth. Most people should start with a base layer set and add a mid layer depending on how cold it is and how much they move.

How to choose, who it is not for, and FAQ

    Who it is for

    • •Ice fishing in winter, when you sit or stand in the cold for long and need steady warmth under your suit.
    • •Fishing while wading: thermal trousers or an overall are worn under waders.
    • •ATV and snowmobile riders who ride into the wind for long stretches.
    • •For women, the mid layer range includes the POLAR W 1396 fleece jacket, cut to a women’s pattern.

    How to choose

Start with the base layer: if moisture stays on your skin, even a thicker garment will not keep you warm. Add a mid layer when it is cold or you stand still for long. How to combine all three layers is explained in our layering guide.

What thermal clothing is not for

    • •Rain and wet snow without an outer layer. Thermal clothing is not waterproof; a rain jacket or a warm suit protects you from moisture.
    • •Wearing over cotton underwear. The base layer must touch your skin, otherwise sweat stays in the cotton and chills you.
    • •Work near open fire. Synthetic fabric and fleece are not spark resistant.

    Frequently asked questions

Is a base layer alone enough?

In cool weather and on the move, a base layer under your jacket is often enough. When it is cold, you sit on the ice or stand in water for long, add a mid layer on top: a fleece jacket, thermal trousers or an insulated jacket.

What is the difference between the base layer and the mid layer?

The base layer fits snugly against the skin and wicks sweat away, while the mid layer is worn over it and holds warmth between your body and your outerwear. That is why the base layer is chosen close fitting and the mid layer looser, so it fits over the base layer.

Is thermal clothing suitable for ATV and snowmobile riding?

Yes. When riding you sit for long and the wind blows, so it pays to wear both layers under a warm suit: thermal underwear next to the skin and fleece or the one-piece POLAR 1395 overall over it.

What size thermal clothing should I choose?

Choose the base layer close fitting, because it only wicks sweat while it touches your skin. Take the mid layer in a size that fits over the base layer and does not restrict movement under your jacket. Measurements are in the size guide.
