Which thermal clothing should you take hiking or camping?
Finntrail thermal clothing for hiking is the layers under your jacket that keep you warm while walking in the forest, picking mushrooms on a cool morning or sleeping in a tent. How to choose
Choose by whether you will mostly walk or stand still. When walking a thinner layer is enough, while at camp and on long stops you need more warmth.

- •A rainy hike without an outer layer. Neither fleece nor the DWR coating of the MASTER jackets will hold off a downpour, so you need a waterproof jacket on top.
- •A winter night out in thermal layers alone. When you stand still in the cold for long, only a combination with a warm suit or jacket holds in the warmth.
- •Hiking with a cotton T-shirt next to the skin. Once you sweat, cotton stays damp for a long time, so when you stop you start to get cold even under warm fleece.
Frequently asked questions
How many layers should I wear when walking, and how many at camp?
When walking two are usually enough: a base layer set and a light MASTER jacket or vest. When you stop at camp, add a fleece jacket or SHERPA 1402 trousers, because when you do not move your body produces less heat.
Can thermal trousers be worn on their own around the tent?
Yes, in dry, cool weather SHERPA 1402 and POLAR 1400 can be worn without outer trousers. POLAR 1400 has knees reinforced with Softshell panels, so they hold up longer to kneeling while picking berries or pitching a tent.
Which base layer set should I take on a trip of several days?
Choose MERINO 6209 or ALL SEASON 6206: both build up less odour, so they stay fresher on a longer trip. Merino wool is also gentle on sensitive skin, and the seamless ALL SEASON dries quickly.
A vest or a jacket for mushroom picking?
The MASTER 1512 vest, if you bend down a lot and need freedom for your arms: it warms your core, and the Powerstretch sides adapt to your movement. If your arms also get cold in the morning, choose the MASTER 1509 jacket.
Does a MASTER jacket fit in a backpack?
Yes, MASTER 1509, MASTER HOOD 1504 and 1510 and MASTER HYBRID 1507 pack down small. On a day hike you carry them in your backpack and put them on only when you stop for a rest or as evening comes.
